In our society today community organisations are trying to achieve social justice by uniting together and voicing out their issues on discrimination and injustices. Some community organizations such as, CENTERLINK, for the LGBT community, ENLACE, for the immigrant community and NAACP, for colored people, have been fighting for social justice and equality. With the help of organizations like these it will be much easier to achieve social justice during my lifetime.
My role in the struggle for social justice is being aware of all the issues affecting the different communities such as the immigrants, the disabled, the LGBT, and the other minorities and not seeing any differences in any of them. Treating all people the same no matter who they are or where they come from. No matter what i pursue as a career in my life, whether it be a soldier or firefighter, I commit to saving lives no matter their race, color, nationality, or sexual orientation. |
Social Justice Social Justice can mean a lot of things. People may have different definitions on social justice because of their nationality and how they were raised. To me Social justice has two meanings. The definition of social is our surroundings and how we connect to society. The definition of justice is to treat one another fairly and equally. My definition of Social Justice while attending a Social Justice High School is that we are all equal and the same, no matter of color or sexual orientation or national origin. While attending Social Justice High School, color, national origins or sexual orientation never determined who you were as an individual.
Teachers and staff members got to know you as a person and who you were on the inside, not what u looked like on the outside. Social Justice High School teachers, staff, and students did not judge a book by it’s cover because they wanted to get to know you and the story behind who you really are as a person.
An obstacle we face while struggling to achieve social justice is discrimination. Social Justice has not been achieved because their is still discrimination against minorities, immigrants and women. A good example of social justice not being met is when blacks were used as slaves during the first part of the 20th century. In today's society immigrants do not have the same rights as other individuals in the U.S, in some instances they are paid less than minimum wage, refuse medical attention, and treated like criminals by INS. A current example of a presidential candidate, Donald Trump said that mexican are drug dealers, rapists, and criminals. These are some examples of why we haven't achieved social justice. |
