Ancient TimesAnimal cruelty has no point of origin, but can be defined differently based on location, time period, and societal views. There are many different definitions of what animal cruelty can be considered, such as hunting, dog fighting, or farm factories. Civilizations hunted for animals for the sole purpose of surviving, but was not considered animal cruelty because of societal norms. Although dog fighting was seemed differently; as a sport for entertainment.

Neanderthals Time PeriodTheir is no written record of when animal cruelty actually began. If we analyzed when animal cruelty began, we can imply that it began when human life began. Hunting can be considered a type of animal cruelty. If we take this into consideration then we could conclude that animal cruelty had it’s beginning about 200,000 years ago during the Neanderthals time. Their only way of survival was by hunting animals.

Time ChangesAccording to Learning to Give, “To begin discussing the history of animal cruelty is to go back literally to ancient times. Fighting dogs for sport, for example, has been traced back as far as the 12th Century, after the war that ensued when the Romans invaded Britain.” showing that cruelty was not seen as an issue, but rather as a sport and a war tactic. Based on how people from a certain society viewed animals determined what cruelty really meant. During this time dog fighting was not considered cruelty. Although time changes and so do definitions.
